Soulless beings that hunt humankind at the behest of their creator Versa.
Eve theorizes that monsters hunt humans because they yearn a soul of their own; a prize that they can never obtain, for the human soul is divine.
According to Void, they are Novrand's autonomous defense system left behind by humanity's creator, which is trying to purge the cosmic parasite from the world. However, the system is failing at its task, for Ardia's pull on the souls of humanity is too strong.
Monsters vs. beasts
Although some beasts are similar to monsters in the sense that they hunt humans, they are entirely different from monsters due to some key differences:
- Monsters don't attack each other
- They act as if they are all "on the same team", even if the monsters are of very different types
- Monsters cannot sexually reproduce
- However, some monsters can split and clone themselves
- Monsters have no reproductive organs unless they are shapeshifters
- Shapeshifters' reproductive organs are mere imitations that lack real function
- Monsters don't need eyesight to hunt
- It is believed that they track human souls via magical means and that this tracking ability has some monster-dependent maximum range
- Monsters don't need to eat or drink to survive
- Monsters that eat humans do so entirely out of secondary reasons such as malice or instinct
- Monsters have magical abilities
