Soulless beings that hunt humankind at the behest of their creator Versa.
Eve theorizes that monsters hunt humans because they yearn a soul of their own; a prize that they can never obtain, for the human soul is divine.
According to Void, they are Novrand's autonomous defense system left behind by humanity's creator, which is trying to purge the cosmic parasite from the world. However, the system is failing at its task, for Ardia's pull on the souls of humanity is too strong.
Monsters vs. beasts
Although some beasts are similar to monsters in the sense that they hunt humans, they are entirely different from monsters due to some key differences:
- Monsters don't need to breathe, eat, drink or sleep to survive
- Monsters that eat humans do so entirely out of secondary reasons such as malice or instinct
- Monsters don't attack each other
- They act as if they are all "on the same team", even if the monsters are of very different types
- Monsters cannot sexually reproduce
- However, some monsters can split and clone themselves
- Monsters have no reproductive organs unless they are shapeshifters
- Shapeshifters' reproductive organs are mere imitations that lack real function
- Monsters don't need eyesight to hunt
- It is believed that they track human souls via magical means and that this tracking ability has some monster-dependent maximum range
- Monsters have magical abilities
Intelligent monsters
There exists a rare group of intelligent monsters who rise above their base urge to kill humans on sight. Examples include vampires and shapeshifters. Some of these monsters are so intelligent that they are even able to blend into human society for years at a time. However, their end goal is the same as all other monsters; they simply perform their gruesome tasks over a longer time period and larger scale.
Cooperation with cults
As they share the same goal, intelligent monsters can and do work with Versa cults. Due to their divine nature, intelligent monsters typically immediately become an object of secondary worship in the cult.
Captive intelligent monsters
It is rare to encounter an intelligent monster, and even rarer still to capture them alive, as they are known to choose death over risking revealing information about their plans in magical interrogation.
However, there are persistent rumours that Neuhäuser University has intelligent monsters in containment. The university officially denies this.
Relation to angels
According to myths, monsters consider angels their natural enemies and are repulsed by them.
